Now, Erik Christian Haugaard, a Dane who writes children's books in English, has translated “The Complete Fairy Tales and Stories,” following-well, almost-the 1874 Danish edition which Andersen himself edited. Not since Jean Hersholt translated 168 stories for “The Complete Andersen” in 1948 has anyone really attempted an inclusive collection of the Andersen tales, famous and obscure, charming and tedious, and the Hersholt work is out of print. Yet, eight of the entries are versions of “The Emperor's New Clothes,” six of them are “The Ugly Duckling” and the existing collections tend to include only the best‐known Andersen. Anyone glancing at “Books in Print,” where there are 64 listings under Hans Christian Andersen, might wonder if still another volume of the celebrated storyteller's work is really needed.
